Mount Vernon neighborhoods and cultural trends reporter

The Journal News/ is looking for a reporter to cover all aspects of life in Mount Vernon, New York.

The city, just north of the Bronx, has a rich cultural history. It is a cradle of hip hop (Heavy D, Diddy, DMX), and has been home to actors and musicians, artists and writers, composers and athletes, politicians and pastors and civil rights leaders.

The city of approximately 74,000-plus residents in four square miles prides itself on its small-town vibe despite its size --- the eighth largest and the second most densely populated city in New York. The 2020 census count shows it gained 10,000 new residents in the past decade. Mount Vernon is majority Black (62%), followed by Hispanic (18%) and white (14%).

A passionate storyteller --- and that is who we seek, regardless of experience --- will find material on every block.

The timing could not be better, too, as Mount Vernon is poised to undergo a renaissance.

While the city faces many challenges, including a school district that is below the state's average graduation rate, distressed commercial corridors and a perception of crime, a new administration is working hard to capitalize on renewed development interest that is drawing newcomers and new businesses and seeing the construction of new residences and commercial spaces.

In this role, you will be charged with people-focused reporting in neighborhoods rich and poor throughout the city to capture that energy and to draw loyal readers and new subscribers.

You will build strong relationships to learn what information community members need/want to know, so that you can write for and not about residents. You will tell stories about community culture, family life and neighborhood issues --- not as a cheerleader but to help people share their knowledge and their lived experience.

If you value, as we do, making journalism more diverse, equitable and inclusive, and are passionate, as we are, about flexing your reporting and writing muscles to help find new audiences through riveting storytelling, this is a role for you.

If you value, as we do, being able to bring your authentic self, this is a role for you. We strive to foster an inclusive and diverse workplace where employees are valued and feel empowered.

In this role, in addition to all we described above, you will:

• Develop relationships with residents, experts, public officials, and others in order to provide unique insight into issues of importance to Mount Vernon.

• Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with influencers and engaged readers through social media.

• Work with storytelling editors and audience analysts to shape reporting and storytelling to meet audience needs and interests on every platform.

• Determine the best digital platforms and methods of presentation to inform the community.

• Consistently make use of solutions journalism principles to produce outstanding enterprise work that leads to positive change within these communities.

Please note that this role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
