Stories begin with a problem or with data, but they center on people and ultimately point to solutions for a person, a community or a society.

The Anderson Independent Mail is seeking a reporter who knows how to seek out the data and the people that point to the problems in our community that need to be solved and to write about the successes our community and its people are celebrating.

Anderson is a growing and changing city about 30 miles from Greenville that anchors the metropolitan area of more than 1 million people. While the city of Anderson is growing and maintains an independent spirit, parts of Anderson County are on the verge of becoming Greenville suburbs. The entire region is grappling with what growth and change means to its diverse population, and many in the community are wondering if and how they will share in Upstate South Carolina’s prosperity.

There are stories to tell about how a small city can create equity for the 31 percent of its residents who are Black, and a growing population of Spanish-speaking residents, and how it can help those who live on the “Alphabet Streets” and other impoverished areas of the city move forward.

This reporter needs to can become deeply knowledgeable about the community and build a deep network of sources across income and ethnic groups. They need to get to know real people and their struggles and victories, and then tell compelling stories about how people, government and other agencies are working to overcome challenges, whether they be by economic, social, education or other issues.

There are also stories to tell about economic success. A small city that continues to grow, in part thanks to nearby urban centers that have propelled regional growth and in part due to coordinated leadership that has drawn major employers to the city and county. But is everyone sharing in that success? We want to write about that, too.

We also are looking for a reporter who can hold government accountable, someone who’s comfortable digging through documents and data to find stories where government is falling short of its mission to serve all people. Equity is an important issue in America today, and it’s important in small cities , too. Especially small cities, such as Anderson, that have big aspirations.
