Job Summary

Responsible to develop opto-mechanical designs of engineering subsystems and corresponding associated tooling/fixture design for assembly. Design output covers projects of different levels of complexity that will include problem analysis, design layout, calculations, verification testing and standards compliance. Will update and create detailed drawings and specifications for existing product lines such as Family diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical detail drawings and drawings of intermediate and final assemblies used in manufacture, assembly, installation and repair of medical devices. Coordinates with vendors and in-house machine shop to develop rapid proof-of-principle prototypes. Participate in prototype assembly and test. Develops basic failure analysis and verification protocols and conducts cross discipline design reviews of design outputs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.

- Generate component and assembly drawings, converting solid models/assemblies into detailed drawings. Indicates dimensions and tolerances, fasteners, and joining requirements as well as document component/assembly level tolerance analyses.

- Provide CAD surfacing and modeling for stress analysis, 3d print breadboards, etc to optimize designs before fabrication.

- Develop and execute verification test protocols for assigned projects. Analyze and summarize test results.

- Create engineering change orders within the PLM system for required changes.

- Conduct cross discipline design reviews of design outputs.

- Hands-on support (i.e. build prototypes, test setup and complete test documentation for verification).

- Support senior engineers to develop & design prototypes as well as tools & fixtures for opto-mechanical assemblies, laser systems and subsystems.

- Complete designs based upon a minimum of direction from supervisor or project leader.

- Embody and deliver the “Exceptional Everyday”



- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in mechanical or industrial technology, drafting technology; or related field/ equivalent experience.


- 5+ years’ experience using Solidworks or other solid modeling software designing and detailing components and top-level assemblies


- GD&T techniques, statistical methods.

- Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacturability) techniques to achieve high yield, low cost and high reliability products.

- Comfortable working with suppliers and assisting in vendor qualifying audits when needed.

- Familiar with machine shop practices.

- Experience in a variety of manufacturing methods including injection molding, sheet metal forming, casting, machining, plating, stamping, staking, gluing and welding.

- Experience in cable design and high-volume manufacturing is a plus.

- Experience with laser/optical based technology is a plus.

- Select, recommend, and prepare changes to existing designs and create new designs when required.

- Ability to review existing designs and optimize for cost and labor efficiencies.

- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

- Ability to maintain CAD proficiency and master current and new CAD systems.

- Experience with PDM Works or other CAD management tools a plus.

- Experience with SAP or other document control system a plus.

- Takes responsibility for assigned projects, requirements and schedules.

- Potential Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration and/or moderate noise levels.

- Potential exposure to high voltage parts and/or shock.
