Probationary firefighter is the first level of classification within the Fire Department. Individuals in this classification work under the supervision of a tenured firefighter, a fire lieutenant, or a fire captain. The primary responsibilities of a probationary firefighter are responding to emergencies; combatting and extinguishing fires; providing medical treatment to victims; and performing rescues.
This position exercises no supervision.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
On a limited basis, safely drives and/or operates Fire Department vehicles, equipment and/or apparatus.
Performs maintenance and minor repair work to ensure the upkeep of department property.
Maintains Fire Department equipment including, but not limited to hoses, ladders, and axes.
Attends and participates in company drills and continuing education classes.
Conducts periodic pre-fire plans within his or her assigned districts to become familiar with streets, buildings, and the location of fire hydrants.
Maintains required reports and/or records.
Reports any unusual or hazardous conditions to a Fire Department officer.
Provides patient care at the scene of medical emergencies.
Conducts fire station tours and performs other fire safety education activities.

The operating and mechanical principles involved in the operation of fire and/or rescue apparatus and associated equipment.
Basic life support methods and practices.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn and read and interpret blueprints and maps.
Learn to observe and evaluate situations to make an appropriate conclusion and/or recommendation.
Learn to drive emergency vehicles in various weather conditions.
Apply learned firefighting techniques and basic life support techniques appropriately.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
React quickly and calmly to emergencies.
Establish and maintain effective working/living relationships with the public and other employees.
Prepare clear and accurate statements or reports.
Operate all types of assigned firefighting equipment and apparatus as assigned or being trained to use.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
No previous firefighting experience is required.
A high school diploma or GED is required.
Position requirements include passing periodic EMS and Fire testing throughout the probationary period.
License or Certificate:
Must possess or obtain a valid Class B Texas driver's license as required by the Texas Department of Public Safety for the type of vehicle being operated.
Probationary firefighters must attain the EMT-Paramedic certification within two (2) years of their hire date.
Self-monitoring of continuing education hours is required to ensure compliance with State certification and licensing requirements.
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
This position requires the full use of sight, hearing, speech, arms, hands, legs and feet.
A drug test, medical evaluation, and psychological evaluation are required prior to the extension of the final job offer.
Ability to lift, pull or drag objects in excess of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50+ pounds.
Ability to maintain equilibrium when climbing a ladder or stairs, and when walking.
Proficient driving on the apparatus to which the employee is assigned.
Knowledge of the location and operating procedures for all equipment assigned to the apparatus.
Successful candidates will be required to go through a twenty-six (26) week fire and EMS academy. During this time, personnel will be evaluated and may be dismissed due to factors such as failed tests or unacceptable performance.
Firefighters will be on probation for two (2) years, or a period not less than one year if previously certified as a Texas paramedic from date of hire prior to becoming Civil Service employees. During this time, their employment is considered to be “at will”.
Firefighters may be assigned to another division within the Fire Department at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
